Demonstration against gender-based violence scheduled in Ankara for August 12; avoid the area

Warning

Event

A demonstration against gender-based violence is scheduled to occur in Ankara on Wednesday, August 12. Protesters will reportedly gather at 19:00 (local time) at the Kolej metro station exit in Ankara. The movement recently gained momentum after officials of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) suggested withdrawing from the Istanbul Convention. Although the demonstration will likely be well attended, previously associated protests have passed peacefully in recent weeks.

A heightened security presence and disruption to travel is to be anticipated in the vicinity of the rally.

Advice

Individuals in Ankara are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
