South Sudan: Hundreds of thousands displaced by flooding as of August 12

As of Wednesday, August 12, flooding in South Sudan has displaced more than 200,000 people and left at least five others dead. The flooding, which has mainly occurred along the Nile River and in Jonglei and Western Equatoria states, has destroyed or damaged at least 3500 homes, devastated agricultural land, and caused dams to burst. A state of emergency has reportedly been declared in Jonglei state for three months to help those affected by the flooding. Many of those displaced have been left with no shelter, food, or drinking water, with aid agencies warning of intense food shortages in Jonglei and the Pibor Administrative Area.

Further rainfall and associated flooding are expected throughout South Sudan in coming weeks. Disruption to travel and utilities is likely in the near term.
