South Korea: Several demonstration rallies to be held in Seoul August 15 /update 1
Several demonstration rallies are expected to be held in Seoul on National Liberation Day on August 15; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution
Event
On Saturday, August 15, several demonstrations have been planned by liberal and conservative groups in the capital Seoul. August 15 is celebrated as National Liberation Day and reports indicate that activists have called for multiple unrelated rallies using this as an opportunity to demonstrate their respective causes. According to reports, the demonstrations are over several issues including demands for President Moon Jae-in's impeachment and newly-imposed government real estate regulations. Local media sources indicate that thousands of people are expected to participate. The Seoul government has reportedly asked for the rallies to be canceled, amid coronavirus disease (COVID-19) concerns. Protests have been planned in the following locations (all times local):
- Jongno district: demonstrators are expected to gather near the Joekseon Hyundai office in the Sajik area before marching to the Blue House; activists will likely march along either Jahamun or Hyoja roads. A separate protest is planned for Gwanghwamun Square from 12:00.
- Jung district: demonstrators are expected to gather at Seoul Plaza, and also in a separate protest outside the Bank of Korea from 12:00.
- Seocho district: participants will gather at the Central District Prosecutor's Office.
Further demonstrations and associated localized travel disruptions are to be expected in the capital on Saturday. Although the rallies are expected to pass peacefully, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. A heightened security presence should be anticipated also.
Advice
Those in Seoul are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid all demonstrations or large gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
