Madagascar: Prison riot kills 20 in Farafagana August 23

At least 20 inmates were killed, eight seriously injured, and dozens fled during a prison riot in Farafagana (Atsimo-Atsinanana region) on Sunday, August 23. Prisoners staged a riot around midday (local time) on Sunday and the deaths occurred as security forces attempted to regain control after inmates split into two groups against guards. As of 16:00 authorities reported to have recaptured 29 inmates, with 31 still free. Increased security has been implemented in the area.
