Hundreds of flights canceled from CJU and PUS from August 26 due to Typhoon Bavi; confirm travel itineraries

Warning

Event

Hundreds of flights from Jeju International Airport (CJU) and Gimhae International Airport (PUS) have been canceled on Wednesday, August 26, due to Typhoon Bavi. The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on August 26 that as of 16:00 (local time) Typhoon Bavi was 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of Jeju Island with a maximum wind speed of 162 kph (100 mph). Bavi has been ranked 'very strong' typhoon, the second-highest classification on a five-tier scale. At least 330 flights are expected to be affected by the storm, while the Korean Maritime Transportation Safety Authority, further announced that thousands of ships have been docked amid safety concerns.

Context

Tropical storms can form in the Pacific Ocean at any time of year, although most typhoons occur during a peak season between June and November. In general, storm systems make landfall along South Korea's southern and southeastern coasts, making these areas, which are home to many industrial and port facilities, particularly at risk of experiencing the full brunt of storms or typhoons. The country has comprehensive and reliable weather tracking and emergency management systems, although powerful storm systems can overwhelm preparedness and recovery programs.

Advice

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
