6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Atacama region on September 1; no tsunami warning immediately issued
Event
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Atacama region some 80km (50mi) northwest of Vallenar on Tuesday, September 1. The quake struck at 00:30 (local time) at a depth of 17km (11mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued. The quake comes following a 7-magnitude earthquake that struck in the same area at 00:09 on Tuesday.
Further aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger.
