Slovakia: Protesters attack government offices in Bratislava October 17

Far-right protesters attack Slovak government offices in Bratislava on October 17; further demonstrations possible

Warning

Event

Far-right protesters attacked the offices of the Slovak government in Bratislava on Saturday, October 17, during protests over measures in place to control the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The crowd threw bottles and other projectiles at the building before being dispersed by riot police using tear gas and water cannon.

Further unrest is possible in the capital in the near term and any demonstrations are likely to be accompanied by a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport.

Context

The Slovakian government declared a state of emergency earlier this month due to a rise in COVID-19 cases and this week introduced new restrictions. The latest measures include a ban on church services and other mass events, as well as the closure of gyms, pools, and other fitness centers. Schools will also switch to remote learning.

Advice

Those in Bratislava are advised to monitor the situation, avoid protests as a precaution, and heed any instructions issued by local authorities.
