Canada: Thousands protest to denounce racism in Montreal on October 3

Thousands protest against racism in Montreal on October 3; avoid all demonstrations

Warning

Event

Thousands of protesters marched in central Montreal on Saturday, October 3, to denounce perceived systemic racism following the recent death of an indigenous woman at a local hospital. The event was largely peaceful with participants marching in central areas of the city. The woman's death is being treated as controversial after a self-made video surfaced showing her reportedly being insulted by nurses before she died. The Quebec Public Security Minister Genevieve Guilbault has announced that a public inquiry will be conducted.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected.

Advice

Individuals in Montreal are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
