Chile: Health workers to strike and hold protests nationwide November 12-13

Several health sector unions intend to hold nationwide anti-government protests and strikes between Thursday, November 12, and Friday, November 13, following failed negotiations with the government over labor-related demands, along with the 2021 public health budget. Emergency services provision will likely continue during the strike period; however, non-emergency public health services are likely to be affected nationwide. Private health clinics will likely remain open during the action, although increased demand for care at private facilities could disrupt services.

The main protest will reportedly take place at Plaza Baquedano in the capital Santiago from 11:00 (local time) on Thursday. Furthermore, members of the Workers' United Center of Chile (CUT) union intend to rally at the CUT headquarters in Santiago from 10:00, and will probably march along La Alameda to join the rally at Plaza Baquedano.

Elsewhere, protests are possible at public health facilities, including hospitals and clinics, and near major public squares. Details on Friday's protests are yet to be released.

A heightened security presence and associated disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.
