Chile: Health workers to strike nationwide Dec. 16

Public healthcare workers call for a nationwide strike in Chile Dec. 16. Emergency services likely to remain available. Protests possible.

Warning

Event

Public healthcare workers affiliated with the National Confederation of Municipal Health Workers (CONFUSAM) have called for a nationwide strike from 0800 Dec. 16. The action is to reject the government's salary readjustment proposal for the public sector.

Disruptions to routine health services at government hospitals and health facilities are likely due to understaffing for the remainder of Dec. 16. Emergency treatment is likely to remain unaffected. Increased demand for care could also disrupt services at private facilities.

Although none have been announced as yet, associated demonstrations are possible during the industrial action. Striking workers could protest outside public hospitals and health facilities, or other common rally points nationwide; in the capital, these include Plaza Baquedano (also known as Plaza Italia or Plaza de la Dignidad) and Palacio la Moneda, where health workers have previously held anti-government protests. Large gatherings are likely to cause localized traffic disruptions, and low-level clashes between police and protesters are possible.

Advice

Confirm appointments at medical facilities in Chile Dec. 16. Be prepared for some delays. Avoid all protests. Follow all security personnel instructions.
