Chile: Union group calls for protests in Valparaiso Dec. 22 and 23
Union group calls for protests around Congress in Valparaiso, Chile, from 1100 Dec. 22 and 23. Localized disruptions are likely.
Event
Leaders of the Public Sector Table (Mesa del Sector Publico, MSP), a group of 16 labor unions, have called for protests in Valparaiso Dec. 22 and 23 to demand the government approve a so-called readjustment law that would increase salaries in the public sector. On Dec. 22, participants will rally outside the National Congress from 1100 and on Dec. 23, participants will march from Plaza de la Victoria to the National Congress, also starting at 1100. The demonstrations are likely to draw large crowds.
Police will probably deploy to monitor the protests and secure the congress building. Isolated skirmishes between police and protesters are possible if the latter breach security cordons. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near the events on both days.
Advice
Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Plan for localized traffic disruptions in central Valparaiso Dec. 22 and 23.
