Student protests causing major disruptions in central Santiago, Chile, Jan. 4. Tight security, disruptions likely to persist through Jan. 5.

Warning

Event

Various student groups have been holding disruptive protests in central Santiago since the morning of Jan. 4, to denounce the national level University Transition Tests (PTU), which were scheduled to begin at 1000. Some demonstrators have reportedly erected barricades near Los Heroes metro on La Alameda, otherwise known as Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, a major thoroughfare in the city; protests have also materialized near the Ministry of Education. Protests could also occur near schools where tests are being held. The protests are likely to persist throughout the day. Additional PTU tests are scheduled for Jan. 5; a continuation of the protests is highly likely on the day.

Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are likely near the demonstrations, especially those on La Alamada. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible if police attempt to clear the roadblocks or arrest those who vandalize government property.

Advice

Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Heed the instructions of security personnel and do not attempt to cross protest blockades. Plan for localized traffic disruptions in central Santiago Jan. 4 and 5.
