A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in Coquimbo Region, central Chile at around 0053 CLST Jan. 16. The epicenter was about 55 km (34 miles) south southwest of Ovalle. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 55 km (38 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt throughout Coquimbo, Valparaiso regions, including La Serena. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days.
