Authorities are responding to a chemical spill in the Middleton area of Christchurch the afternoon of Jan. 20. The spill occurred at around 1245 at Owens Transport on Baigent Way. Officials say that approximately 1,000 liters (264 gallons) of the unidentified chemical leaked. Officials evacuated the area around 1330 after fumes from the chemical caused five injuries.
An increased security presence will probably continue near the incident site in the coming hours; police have cordoned off the area. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible.
