Malawi: Further public transport protests possible nationwide following disruptive unrest Jan. 26
Further protests by public transport workers over COVID-19 restrictions possible nationwide following violent demonstrations Jan. 26.
Event
Further protests and transport strikes are possible in the coming days in urban centers across Malawi following demonstrations Jan. 26. In Lilongwe, security forces clashed with minibus and taxi operators who had suspended services and were protesting restrictions on the number of passengers allowed in vehicles, and the increased price of fuel. Similar incidents were reported in Mwanza, Blantyre, and Zomba. Following demonstrations, a deal to increase the number of passengers has reportedly been reached; however, it is currently unclear if terms have been reached over the fuel issue.
Tensions over the cost of fuel and other transport restrictions are likely to persist. Further protests will likely focus on main routes through large cities, minibus depots and taxi ranks, and in pickup areas around large markets. Localized road travel disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that may occur. Clashes between protesters and security forces are likely in the event of further demonstrations.
Advice
Avoid all large gatherings and protests as a precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Plan for localized disruption during any further protest or strike action.
