South Sudan: Authorities tighten COVID-19-related restrictions nationwide as of Feb. 4 /update 9
Authorities tighten COVID-19-related restrictions across South Sudan as of Feb. 4; domestic and international flights operating.
Event
As of Feb. 4, authorities in South Sudan have tightened measures put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19 and new variants of the disease identified in multiple countries. Under the new edict, individuals are required to wear protective face coverings while in public. Penalties will be applied for noncompliance.
Additional measures imposed nationwide include the following:
All social and religious gatherings are banned until further notice.
All schools will remain closed, except classes scheduled for examinations.
Private and public sectors to make provisions allowing nonessential staff to stay home on paid leave or alternative their staff in shifts.
Public transport will operate at a maximum of 50-percent capacity.
Restaurants and cafes are open but are subject to strict hygiene and social distancing measures.
Bars and nightclubs will remain closed.
International Travel
Domestic and international flights are operational. Incoming international travelers arriving at Juba International Airport (JUB) require South Sudan's National Taskforce permission before entering the country. Once permission is granted, a traveler must present a negative COVID-19 test result from a screening taken within 96 hours before arriving in South Sudan. All incoming travelers are subject to a 14-day quarantine or self-isolation. Travelers and airline operators must adhere to preventive measures, including wearing protective facemasks and social distancing. All aircraft must be disinfected after arrival.
The nation's land borders have reopened; however, cross-border movement remains largely suspended due to neighboring countries' restrictions.
Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity.
