On Feb. 3, the US Embassy in Juba issued a security alert following an increase of vehicular checkpoint activities by local law enforcement and military personnel in Juba. According to the embassy, officials conducting searches and seizures at some of these checkpoints have also requested money. The embassy did not disclose sources or confirm the number of incidents. No other diplomatic missions in South Sudan have issued similar alerts.

Context

Violent crime, such as carjackings, shootings, ambushes, assaults, robberies, and kidnappings, is common throughout South Sudan, including Juba. Foreign nationals have been the victims of rape, sexual assault, armed robberies, and other violent crimes. Criminals frequently wear security service uniforms, carry military weapons, and use the ruse of security checkpoints or official business to stop individuals or gain access to compounds.
