Violent protests involving security forces and students of the Barikadimy University (University of Taomasina) have occurred in Taomasina, Feb. 18. At least one fatality and several other injuries follow the security forces' reported use of live ammunition to disperse demonstrators. Travel on the RN2 in the vicinity of the protest location has been affected. Protesting students are calling for the payment of up to four months of educational allowances.
An increased security presence is likely to remain in the vicinity of the university and further protests and associated clashes are possible in the coming days. The protest is reportedly linked to a nationwide student strike and protests in other locations cannot be discounted. Travel disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all associated events.
