Malawi: Anti-government protest planned in Mzuzu March 5 /update 1
Activists plan anti-government protest in Mzuzu, Malawi from 0800, March 5. Increased security, disruptions likely. Violence possible.
Event
Activists from the United Transformation Movement (UTM) have planned an anti-government demonstration in Mzuzu March. 5. Participants plan to gather at the Katoto Grounds from 0800 before marching to the Civic Center, passing through the main highway (M1 and onto the M5). The action is to denounce alleged increased nepotism and poor governance.
Police will likely deploy additional personnel to manage the demonstration. Business disruptions are likely near the protest. Traffic disruptions, including road closures, are likely in surrounding areas. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.
Context
Malawi has enjoyed a period of political stability since Lazarus Chakwera assumed the presidency in June 2020; however, tensions within the Tonse Alliance, comprising an alliance of nine political parties, will almost certainly persist and worsen amid the multitude of divergent views within the former opposition coalition. Furthermore, Chakwera's government has been criticized for the regional imbalance of the cabinet, with few people from the UTM's Northern region appointed, while they played a significant role in electing Chakwera's Tonse Alliance. This could pose a challenge in maintaining the alliance's ability to operate as one cohesive group and avoid internal divisions. A break-up in the coalition is unlikely through 2021.
Advice
Avoid the protest. Heed the directives of the security forces. Leave the area at the first sign of violence. Plan for ground travel disruptions in central Mzuzu March 5.
