Malaysia: Protests opposing court verdict may occur nationwide through mid-March

Activists may demonstrate across Malaysia through mid-March against court verdict. Tight security likely; disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Muslim groups may protest across the country through mid-March to oppose a March 10 court verdict that allowed non-Muslim religious publications to include the term "Allah" and other words typically used only by Muslims in Malaysia. Organizations supporting the ruling may stage counterrallies. Possible protest sites include the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya and the Kuala Lumpur High Court. Gatherings may also occur in other urban centers, such as Sabah State's Kota Kinabalu and Sarawak State's Kuching. Possible demonstration venues include court facilities, government buildings, and prominent intersections and parks. Dozens to hundreds of people may participate in any action.

Authorities will probably heighten security, including erecting roadblocks and security cordons, at any protest site. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, particularly if the demonstrators occupy nearby roads. Clashes between activists and security personnel or between opposing groups of protesters may occur. Mass arrests are possible if authorities consider any demonstrators to violate COVID-19 restrictions.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Seek updated information from local contacts on protest locations, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Plan for possible disruptions near gatherings and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
