Event

Two unidentified gunmen shot and wounded the Catholic Bishop-elect of South Sudan's Rumbek Diocese, April 25, in an apparent targeted attack. The assailants reportedly forced their way into the Italian-born cleric's home late at night and shot him three times before fleeing. The victim, who has been evacuated to Kenya for medical treatment, was slated to undergo his episcopal ordination and officially take charge of the diocese on May 23. Authorities have reportedly arrested dozens of suspects in the wake of the incident.

Context

South Sudan remains one of the most dangerous countries for foreign nationals, with the threat against foreign aid workers and religious clerics often being higher due to the remote and insecure locations in which they typically work. The April 25 incident follows the killing of an aid worker in January in Upper Nile State South Sudan reported nine incidents and nine aid workers killed in 2020; armed groups have killed at least 122 humanitarian workers since 2013.
