Guinea: Further protests possible across Guinea over restrictions on religious events /update 1
Further protests possible across Guinea through mid-May following incidents in Kankan and Siguiri over restrictions on religious events.
Event
Further protests are possible across Guinea through mid-May in response to COVID-19 restrictions on religious events. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces were reported in Kankan overnight May 4-5 to protest a decision from authorities banning nightly events in mosques for the last ten days of Ramadan. The measure was enacted in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions. Police reportedly used tear gas to disperse participants who set fire to tires and erected barricades on roads across the city. Similar protests occurred in Siguiri May 3-4.
An increased security presence is likely in both areas in the coming days. Additional security presence is expected in other parts of the country should similar protests erupt. Related clashes are possible. Transport disruptions are also likely in the vicinity of all gatherings.
Advice
Avoid demonstrations and large concentrations of police. Seek updated information on route and destination security and road conditions before conducting ground movements. Leave the area immediately if crowds form or violence occurs.
