Authorities in Konso Zone of the Southern National, Nationalities, and People's Regional State (SNNPR) have imposed an indefinite nightly curfew in the city of Karat effective May 6. The move comes in response to increasing criminal activity, in particular from organized crime. Curfew hours run 21:00-05:00, during which time frame all persons must remain in their homes unless attending to medical emergencies with the approval of local authorities. Additionally, vehicular traffic, including movement by three-wheeled taxis known as bajaj, is prohibited between the hours of 20:00-06:00. Essential businesses such as bars and restaurants must close by 21:00 daily.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to ensure adherence; localized transport and commercial disruptions are likely. Locals opposed to the measure may stage protests; police will likely move forcefully to disperse any such gatherings that may materialize.
