Suspected criminals kill at least 19 in multiple attacks in Ivondro, Atsimo-Atsinanana region of Madagascar, May 22-23.

Suspected criminals, known locally as Dahalo, attacked multiple villages in southern Madagascar, May 22-23. Targeted villages include Morafeno, Benonoka, and Ampahatelo in Ivondro commune, Midongy-Atsimo District of Atsimo-Atsinanana Region. The incidents occurred overnight and involved up to 150 assailants. More than 300 houses were destroyed with 500 cattle stolen. Investigations into the attack are ongoing; however, attacks have been linked to cultural practices involving cattle rustling.

Heightened security and associated transport disruptions such as roadblocks and checkpoints are likely in the impacted area in the near term. Further armed attacks remain likely.

Exercise caution in the affected region. Heed the directives of the authorities. Liaise with trusted contacts prior to travel in rural areas and at night outside of major urban centers. Travel with identification to facilitate movement through checkpoints.
