Burkina Faso: Unidentified militants kill approximately 100 people in Solhan, Yagha Province, June 4-5

Event

Unknown militants have killed approximately 100 people in an armed attack at the village of Solhan in Yagha Province, Sahel Region, that began in the evening hours of June 4 through to early June 5. Reports indicate that the assailants burnt down several houses and the central market in the area. The government has since declared 72-hour national mourning period. Authorities claim that this has been declared the most severe attack to have taken place in several years. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, jihadists linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State are likely responsible.

Solhan is located approximately 11 km (7 miles) southwest of Sebba, the administrative capital of Yagha Province.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to the impact area following the violence. Additional violence is also likely in this region of Burkina Faso.

Context

The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across northern Burkina Faso. Furthermore, Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
