South Korea: Unionized delivery workers launch indefinite strike nationwide as of June 9

Unionized delivery workers on an indefinite strike across South Korea as of June 9. Delivery delays likely; protests possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized delivery workers are staging an indefinite strike across South Korea as of June 9. Workers launched the action after talks with private delivery companies stalled. The Parcel Delivery Workers' Solidarity Union claims the companies have not fulfilled their obligations under a deal reached in January on package sorting. Approximately 2,100 unionized delivery workers will participate in the work stoppage. Several thousand unionized workers plan to delay work by two hours each morning.

Delivery service delays are likely for the duration of the labor action. Lingering disruptions may continue beyond the end of the strike as service providers work to resolve their backlogs.

Protests are possible during the strike. Demonstrators may gather near distribution centers, company offices, and government buildings. While protests probably will not become severely disruptive, minor localized traffic delays are possible.

Advice

Confirm delivery schedules for the duration of the work stoppage. Consider using alternative carriers if concerned about time-sensitive deliveries.
