Supporters of presidential candidate Pedro Castillo to hold protests in Lima, other cities in Peru, June 19. Counter-protests possible.

Warning

Event

Supporters of presidential candidate Pedro Castillo plan to hold protests in several major cities in Peru on June 19. Castillo leads the vote count in the nation's election but has not been certified as the winner; the purpose of the action is to demand electoral authorities confirm his victory.

The largest protest will likely occur in Lima, where activists will assemble at Plaza Dos de Mayo starting at 15:00 before marching to Plaza San Martin, where a rally will take place. Related demonstrations are also planned at the following times and locations:

  • Chimbote: Plaza 28 de Julio, 16:00

  • Cusco: Plaza Limaqpampa, 15:00

  • Huanuco: Alameda de la Republica, 15:00

  • Lambayeque: Plazuela Elias Aguirre, 15:00

  • Piura: Concha Acustica, 15:00

  • Tacna: Plaza Zela, 15:00

  • Trujillo: Plazuela el Recreo, 16:00

The gathering in Lima will probably draw very large crowds, while participation at other protests will likely significantly lower. Supporters of Keiko Fujimori, the apparent loser of the presidential election, also plan to protest at Alameda 28 de Julio in Lima starting at 16:00. While the two opposing demonstrations should not come within close proximity of each other, skirmishes between rival groups of activists cannot be ruled out. Heightened security, as well as transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Strictly heed instructions from local authorities. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks; look for alternative routes or wait for police to reopen the roads. Allow additional time to reach destinations in the vicinity of announced demonstration locations.
