Peru: Protests related to disputed election outcome likely through mid-July
Protests related to the disputed outcome of the June presidential run-off election likely in Peru through mid-July. Protest in Lima July 3.
Event
Protests related to the disputed outcome of the June 6 run-off presidential election between Pedro Castillo (Peru Libre party) and Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular party) are likely in Lima and possibly other urban centers through mid-July. Castillo received just over 50-percent of the vote; however, Fujimori has disputed the outcome and cited voter fraud. The National Jury of Elections (Jurado Nacional de Elecciones, JNE) is currently reviewing appeals and has indicated that its work will likely conclude July 15. Protests in the coming days are likely to occur near prominent government buildings, major plazas, and JNE offices. Supporters of Fujimori plan to gather at the Congreso de la Republica in Lima from 10:00 July 3. Hundreds of people are likely to attend the gathering.
Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor related gatherings. Further calls to protest by either Fujimori or Castillo supporters are likely. Groups supporting either candidate may also call for strike action. Should the outcome of the vote be delayed or if candidates continue to cite fraud after results are confirmed, the frequency of protests could increase. Clashes between protesters and security forces or between rival political party supporters remain possible.
Advice
Liaise with trusted contacts and monitor local political and protest-related developments. Exercise caution near likely protester gathering areas. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution.
