Cyprus: Protests likely July 15-20 to denounce visit of Turkish president
Demonstrations likely in Cyprus July 15-20 ahead of controversial visit by Turkish president; avoid all protests
Event
Protesters from around Cyprus plan to gather at the Cultural Center in Deryneia July 17 to denounce the planned July 20 visit to the TRNC by Turkish President Recep Erdogan. The US Embassy has warned that further protests are possible in major urban centers July 15-20; in particular, it advises US citizens to avoid or remain alert in downtown Nicosia, including near the Presidential Palace and the Agios Dometios and Ledra Street crossings with the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and in the Deryneia area of Famagusta.
Police will almost certainly monitor any protests and could try to break up rallies that are especially large or disruptive. While clashes are unlikely, isolated skirmishes are possible. Protesters could attempt to march along or block roads, causing localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Exercise caution near protests due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations.
