Lebanon: Anti-government protests likely to continue nationwide following resignation of Prime Minister-designate July 15
Anti-government protests likely to continue across Lebanon in the coming days following July 15 resignation of Prime Minister-designate.
Event
Anti-government protests are likely to continue across Lebanon in the coming days following the resignation of Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri July 15. Hariri stepped down after failing to form a new government over the course of the past eight months. His resignation immediately prompted a resurgence of demonstrations condemning government inaction amid worsening social and economic conditions. Demonstrators blocked roads across the country July 15, including in Beirut, Aakar, Deir Aamar, Sidon, and the Beqa'a Valley. Clashes erupted between security forces and protesters; security forces reportedly resorted to the use of live ammunition amid the violence in Beirut and arrested a number of demonstrators.
Potential sites for any future protests include public squares, government buildings, and city centers. In Beirut, protests will likely continue to occur at the Port of Beirut, the Ministry of Justice, Riad el-Solh Road, Martyr's Square, and near the government palace. Demonstrators may burn tires and barricade main roadways, prompting ground travel disruptions. Security forces will almost certainly continue to monitor and respond to all protests and roadblocks. Further clashes between security forces and protesters are likely.
Advice
Avoid all protests due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near likely protest locations. Monitor local media for protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near demonstrations. Follow all police instructions.
