Malaysia: Activists call for vehicle rally protests in multiple cities, July 24

Activists call for vehicle rally protests in multiple locations throughout Malaysia, July 24. Increased security is likely.

Warning

Event

Activist groups plan to stage vehicle rallies at multiple locations on July 24 to condemn perceived government failures in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of late July 23, social media messages posted anonymously by unidentified organizers are calling for protest processions at the following locations and times:

  • Kuala Lumpur: Bangsar Light Rapid Transit Station, 11:00

  • Johor: Taman University, 15:00

  • Kedah: RHB Bank in Padang Serai, 15:00

  • Malacca: Hotel Riveria, 15:00

  • Kota Kinabalu: Plaza 333, time unknown

  • Kuching: Reservoir Park, 11:00

  • Selangor: Quayside Mall, 15:00

Additional protests rallies are likely in other cities. Organizers may not announce intended starting times and locations in advance. Rallies are possible near government buildings, major intersections, and shopping centers.

Authorities have warned that they will move to disperse all protests due to ongoing COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible. Demonstrations and associated security measures may prompt localized business and transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the possibility of violence. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations near planned protest venues.
