Clashes between rival factions within the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition in Magenis, Upper Nile State, resulted in an unconfirmed number of military casualties, Aug. 7. The fighting was sparked when elements within the movement declared that First Vice President Riek Machar had been ousted as the group's leader. Lieutenant-General Simon Gatwech Dual was subsequently declared the new interim leader. Violence reportedly subsided the morning of Aug. 7.

Tensions between the two rival sides will likely persist in the coming days, and further conflict is possible. Violence in Upper Nile State could also spread to other areas of the country.
