Unidentified gunmen killed 12 soldiers in an attack on the village of Dounkou, Toeni Commune, Boucle du Mouhoun Region, located near the border with Mali, August 8. At least eight additional soldiers were injured in the attack and seven others are reported missing as of August 9. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. A security operation is reportedly ongoing in the area.
Similar attacks are almost certain to occur in Boucle du Mouhoun Region over the medium term.
Context
The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
