Event
Further protests and associated violence are possible in Ankara's Altindag district following anti-refugee rioting that took place the evening of Aug. 11. Hundreds of local residents gathered in the Battalgazi and Onder neighborhoods in response to the recent death of a local teenager reportedly from knife wounds received during a fight between Syrian and Turkish youths. Protesters vandalized businesses, homes, and other property belonging to Syrian migrants.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain tight security in the affected neighborhoods until it becomes clear that no further violent incidents are imminent. The Ankara Police Department has cautioned the public concerning a number of provocative posts and disinformation being circulated on social media concerning the situation; at least 76 people have been arrested for being directly involved in the rioting of Aug. 11 or disseminating false information. Confrontations between protesters and security forces, as well as clashes between ethnic Turkish and Syrian residents, are likely during any future gatherings that may materialize.
