Event
Assailants attacked a checkpoint and detonated explosive devices near a security convoy in the Rashad area of Kirkuk Governorate early Sept. 5. The attacks left 13 police officers dead; six others were wounded. Officials have attributed the attack to the Islamic State (IS).
Authorities will probably maintain increased security in the area as investigations continue. Localized transport disruptions are likely near the scene of the incident over the coming hours. Additional similar attacks cannot be ruled out.
Context
The attack on Sept. 5 marks one of the deadliest attacks against Iraqi security forces since the fall of IS' proto-state in 2019. While the militant group is no longer capable of capturing and controlling large swathes of territory, it still remains operable in small groups carrying out hit-and-run attacks against security forces within Iraq.
