Activists to protest against COVID-19 policies in Vilnius, Lithuania, Sept. 10; disruptions likely; violence possible.

Activists affiliated with the Lithuanian Family Movement are planning to demonstrate in Vilnius Sept. 10 to denounce COVID-19 policies. Participants will gather on Cathedral Square from around 10:30 and could march to the Parliament Building. The protest is scheduled to disperse by 16:00; organizers expect that between 7,000 and 10,000 people will attend.
Associated security measures could prompt localized disruptions. In addition, police could move to disperse any disruptive protesters and will likely resort to force if resisted. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted, they would face a significant incidental threat in the vicinity of any violence
Context
Officials previously withdrew authorization for the demonstration to take place near the parliament building. The denial of initial authorization was partly a result of fears that the protest could turn violent; a related gathering Aug. 10 degenerated into clashes between police and protesters.
Advice
Exercise caution in the vicinity of the demonstration Sept. 10 and allow additional time for essential travel in the area. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
