South Sudan: Factions within the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition clash in Upper Nile State, Sept. 13

Event

Clashes between rival factions within the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) occurred in the Korjala and Geizan areas of Magenis, Upper Nile State, Sept. 13. At least 20 soldiers from both factions were killed in the clashes.

Tensions between the two rival sides will likely persist in the coming weeks, and further conflict is possible despite a ceasefire agreement on Aug. 12. Violence in Upper Nile State could also spread to other areas of the country. Both sides are likely to implement elevated security measures in their respective areas of control. Higher than normal military activity is likely.

Context

Similar clashes were reported in the area Aug. 7 and Aug. 27. The fighting was sparked when elements within the movement declared that First Vice President Riek Machar had been ousted as the group's leader. Lieutenant-General Simon Gatwech Dual was subsequently declared the new interim leader.
