Nepal: Activists plan protest march in Kathmandu Oct. 8

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) has called for a protest march from Maitighar Mandala to Parliament in Kathmandu from 12:00 Oct. 8. Participants intend to denounce the government's process to approve the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) aid program; some parties, including the CPN, claim the MCC only serves U.S. interests. Organizers have not announced a march route, though protesters will likely move along Tanka Prasad Ghumti Sadak. Other organizations, such as the Advanced Democratic Party and National Awakening Campaign, may also participate in the protest. Participation in the march may be between hundreds and a few thousand people.

Security personnel will likely monitor the protest and may try to disperse the march if it is especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely along and near the march route, especially if police close roads in the area.
