Communal clashes kill at least 37 people in Tonj East County, South Sudan, Oct. 2-3. Further incidents possible.

Fighting between the Thiik and Luachjang communities has left at least 37 people dead and 48 others injured in Romathieng village, Tonj East County, Warrap State, Oct. 2-3. According to local officials, the fighting erupted over cattle raids and retaliatory attacks. Dozens of houses were also destroyed during the violence. Additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent further violence.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further clashes between rival communities are also possible over the coming days and weeks. Incidents are unlikely to target foreign personnel; however, the risk from incidental violence remains high.
