Nigeria: Two separate attacks in Sokoto State, Oct. 7 and 8, leave at least 31 people dead
At least 31 people killed in two separate attacks in Sokoto State, Nigeria, Oct. 7 and 8. Further violence is likely.
Event
Two mass-casualty attacks were reported in Sokoto State, Oct. 7 and 8. On Oct. 8, unidentified assailants attacked a market area in Ungwan Lalle, Sabon Birni Local Government Area (LGA). The assailants, riding on motorcycles, killed at least 20 people, injured several others, and damaged property and vehicles. The violence follows another assault in Mammande village, Gwadabawa LGA, on Oct. 7, by a suspected vigilante group, the Yan Sakai. The attack left 11 Fulani herdsmen dead. It is not clear if the attacks are connected.
Context
The latest violence highlights the persistent insecurity in northern Nigeria in 2021 which has resulted in hundreds of casualties. Communal violence and banditry, motivated by conflict over access to resources and long-standing grievances, are common. Authorities have sought to contain the violence by imposing telecommunication restrictions and movement restrictive measures in response; however, the large area and insufficient state resources negate any meaningful reduction in tensions and associated conflict. Further violence is likely.
Advice
Heed the directives of local authorities and carry personal identification documents. Exercise a high degree of vigilance due to the pervasive insecurity. If operating in the area over the long term, do not discuss plans or travel routes publicly, vary routes and times of travel, and ensure the use of secure transport. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
