New Caledonia: Trade union plans protest march in Noumea Oct. 18
Unionized workers call for protest march in Noumea, New Caledonia, from 08:00 Oct. 18. Increased security likely; skirmishes possible.
Event
The Confederation des Syndicats des Travailleurs Caledoniens Force Ouvriere (CSTC-FO) trade union has called for a protest march in central Noumea Oct. 18. Participants intend to denounce new COVID-19-related health restrictions, including the introduction of a health pass. Organizers plan to gather at the corner of Jules Ferry and General Gallieni roads at 08:00, from which the participants will march to several locations:
08:30: MEDEF - New Caledonia office, Rue Jean Jaures
09:00: Government of New Caledonia office, Route des Artifices
10:15: Congress of New Caledonia, Boulevard Vauban
11:30: High Commissioner of New Caledonia, Avenue du Marechal Foch
12:30: Mayor’s Office, Rue du General Mangin
13:30: Gaston Bourret Hospital, Avenue Paul Doumer
Several dozen to a few hundred people will likely participate in the protest march. Security personnel will likely monitor the march and may try to disperse protesters if they are disruptive. Skirmishes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely along and near roadways on the march route.
Advice
Avoid the protest march due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area.
