Activists call for demonstrations in Quito, Ecuador, Oct. 20; protests blocking key highways remain possible nationwide as of Oct. 19
Event
Opposing activist groups have called for additional protests in Quito, Oct. 20. Pro-government protesters plan to gather at Quito's Plaza de la Independencia, also known as Plaza Grande, from 10:00, Oct. 20. Anti-government activists plan to gather at Caja del Seguro from 15:00, Oct. 20, and march to the National Assembly. The route for the march has not been confirmed.
The demonstrations in the capital Oct. 20 are due to take place as multiple protests were reported Oct. 18. Protesters gathered in opposition of rising fuel prices and made several labor-related demands. Groups of mainly farmers and teachers have blocked traffic along several key highways in the provinces of Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi, and Carchi. Further similar protests are possible in the coming days and can continue to cause significant traffic disruptions. Participants may block roads with burning tires and debris.
Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests and secure government buildings. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if police attempt to disperse those who block roads or breach security cordons near government buildings. Clashes between opposing groups of protesters also cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed instructions from authorities. Plan accordingly for ground freight delivery delays and supply chain disruptions. Consider alternative shipping methods for critical cargo until the protest ends and freight traffic returns to normal levels.
