A mass prison escape occurred in Oyo, Oyo State, at around 22:00 Oct. 22. Authorities confirmed that unidentified armed assailants attacked the Abolongo prison and engaged security personnel while using explosives to gain entry to the facility. Up to 800 detainees have been released, some of them quickly recaptured by security forces. There have been no reported casualties.

Officials could increase security near the prison and wider state in response to the incident. Search operations could lead to localized transport disruptions such as checkpoints or roadblocks. Clashes involving fugitives and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

The jail attack in Oyo is the third major attack targeting prison facilities in southern Nigeria recently. Similar armed attacks occurred in Imo State in April, when several hundred inmates were freed, while about 240 prisoners were released in Kogi State overnight Sept 12-13. Similar attacks are likely over the coming weeks and months.
