Burkina Faso: Protesters march in Ouagadougou, Nov. 16
Protesters march against insecurity in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Nov. 16. Transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.
Event
Activists are currently protesting in Ouagadougou, Nov. 16 to condemn the rise of insecurity and demand the resignation of President Roch Kabore. Reports indicate that protesters have gathered at the Place de la Nation (formerly known as the Place de la Revolution), the United Nations Roundabout, and the Primature (the office of the Prime Minister). Additional gatherings could occur near government agencies, including the Ministry of Defense and presidential palace, and in prominent squares and memorials around Ouagadougou.
Localized transportation disruptions and heightened security are likely during the protest. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are also possible, especially given the anti-government nature of the protest.
Context
The protest activity follows a Nov. 14 attack in Soum province in which at least 32 people were killed by suspected militants. Activists have engaged in sporadic protests against the government's inability to halt the increase in deadly militant violence in recent months. The announced protests in Burkina Faso represent an expansion of the trend. While most of the demonstrations have remained peaceful, clashes with security forces are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed the advice of security officials. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration locations, including on Nov. 16. Monitor local sources for additional information on protests as organizers may not announce plans in advance.
