Nepal Bar Association threatens to intensify protests in Nepal from Nov. 20. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Event

The Nepal Bar Association is threatening to intensify ongoing protests demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana from Nov. 20. Lawyers are demanding Rana, who has been accused of corruption and political bias, resign by Nov. 19. If Rana does not resign, protest organizers plan to hold gatherings at High Courts across the country; gatherings are also likely at the Supreme Court of Nepal in Kathmandu. Protests are possible at other venues, such as other government buildings and public squares. Lawyers have been holding protests at the Supreme Court as well as at bar association offices in recent days; minor skirmishes were reported outside the Supreme Court. Dozens to hundreds of people will likely gather at protest sites, especially in major cities and towns.

Authorities will likely monitor and heighten security measures at all rally venues. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible, especially if protesters occupy or march on roads. Clashes between police and activists could occur, particularly if officials attempt to disperse any disruptive rallies. Counterprotesters supporting Rana may also gather near protests, possibly resulting in violence.

Advice

Avoid any protests due to possible violence. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for possible transport and business disruptions, especially near court buildings. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
