Malawi: Protests likely nationwide through early December; associated clashes possible /update 3
Protests over cost of living and unemployment likely across Malawi through early December. Further clashes possible; avoid all protests.
Event
Further anti-government protests are likely nationwide through early December. Protesters have gathered on multiple occasions in urban centers to protest the high cost of living and high rates of unemployment. Additional protests are scheduled through early December. Some participants have called for President Lazarus Chakwera's resignation. Security forces have been deployed to monitor all protests, some of which have degenerated into violence. Clashes occurred Nov. 19 during protests in Blantyre, where participants threw stones at police officers and erected roadblocks with burning material. Police officers reportedly used tear gas to disperse protesters. There were also reports of violence and theft amid the protests.
Authorities may maintain a heightened security presence over the coming weeks to monitor for additional protests and associated disruptions. Protests may lead to transport and business disruptions. Further clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be discounted.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Plan for ground travel delays in the vicinity of any protest that may occur. Heed instructions of local officials. IF violence occurs, leave the area immediately.
