Informational

Event

Authorities confirmed that armed assailants ambushed a military detachment in Foube (also known as Hoube), Sanmatenga Province, killing nine police officers and about ten civilians Nov. 22. Officials also indicated that at least eight security personnel remain unaccounted for. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Authorities are likely conducting search operations to locate the missing gendarmes and additional patrols to prevent further similar attacks.

Context

The attack underscores the insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. An armed attack occurred near Inata gold mine in Soum Province on Nov. 14, leaving up to 57 people dead.

Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.

Advice

Avoid the area due to the high risk of militant violence. Heed the advice of security officials. Liaise with trusted contacts before traveling in the area. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
