Peru: Earlier 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Datem del Maranon Province, not Barranaca Province, Nov. 28, as earlier reported. /update 1

Earlier 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Datem del Maranon Province, not Barranca Province, Peru, as earlier reported, at 05:52 Nov. 28.

Critical

Event

An earlier magnitude-7.5 earthquake occurred near the town of Barranca, in Datem del Maranon Province, Peru, 05:52 Nov. 28, not near the city of Barranca, in Barranca Province, as was earlier reported. The epicenter was about 42 km (27 miles) north-northwest of Barranca, Datem del Maranon Province, Peru. The temblor occurred at a depth of approximately 112 km (70 miles) and strong shaking was likely felt near the epicenter, while weaker shaking was felt elsewhere in northern and central Peru and much of Ecuador.

Initial reports indicate that some damage has occurred. However, the epicenter of the earthquake in Datem del Maranon Province is a sparsely populated area; this and the relatively large depth of focus of the earthquake will serve to limit its impact somewhat.

Advice

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
