Burkina Faso: Civil society group plans nationwide anti-government protest Dec. 11
Civil society group to stage anti-government protests across Burkina Faso, Dec. 11. Transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.
Event
Activists associated with the Coalition of African Patriots of Burkina Faso (COPA-BF) plan to demonstrate across Burkina Faso, Dec. 11. The purpose of the action is to condemn perceived government repression against COPA-BF members during a recent protest in Bobo-Dioulasso. Organizers have as yet announced no specific start times or rally locations; however, potential gathering sites in Ouagadougou include the Place de la Nation (formerly known as the Place de la Revolution), the United Nations Roundabout, and the Primature (the office of the Prime Minister). Additional rallies could occur near government facilities, prominent squares, and memorials in cities elsewhere across the country.
Localized transportation disruptions and heightened security are likely during any protests that may materialize. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed the advice of security officials. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration locations on Dec. 11. Monitor local sources for additional information on protests as organizers may not announce plans in advance.
