Various activist groups, including those who favor and oppose abortion rights, plan to participate in demonstrations outside the National Assembly in Quito Dec. 9. The protest actions will coincide with a debate on a bill that would expand abortion rights in Ecuador. Related events are possible in urban centers nationwide; at least one group that supports abortion rights has called for a protest at the University Pedestrian Bridge in Portoviejo, around 230 km from Quito.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor events outside Parliament and other locations where they occur. The presence of large numbers of people and associated crowd-control measures could prompt some localized ground transport disruptions.
